Substitutionary Atonement - This phrase is a theological phrase use to describe the principle whereby a person’s sin-debt is paid by another. In the most classic example Christ is the substitutionary atonement for the sins of the elect; He paid the price of death that was due to God’s chosen people. See also atonement and propitiation.

"I am profitably engaged in reading the Bible. Take all of this Book upon reason that you can, and the balance by faith, and you will live and die a better man." Abraham Lincoln

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

    Hebrews 4:15–16 (ESV)
